CBA Catch Routine

Both position players and pitchers should be proficient in the catch routine. After 3-4 weeks, there should be improved catch performance in PFP, Cuts & Relays, I/O & other Team Drills.

*All Positions Should complete Phases 1-5, EXCEPT OF's can skip Phase 5

PHASE 1 (HOPS & GLOVEWORK)

For All Positions

  1. Short hops from knees (right at you, glove side, and back hand)
    • @ 8 feet
    • Work through the hop
    • Head behind the ball
    • Stay Athletic
    • Give good feeds
  2. Short hops from wide base (right at you, glove side, and back hand) 
    • @ 8 feet
    • Work through the hop
    • Head behind the ball
    • Stay Athletic
    • Give good feeds
    • Place hat in mouth for variation to reinforce good glove presentation out front 

PHASE 2 (ANGLES & FOOTWORK) • 75% EFFORT ON THROWS

For All Positions

  1. Clock Drill 
    • Throwing Drill
      • Plyometric footwork (non-lazy) • Changing Direction with Athleticism
      • Short Arm-Slot 
      • @ 25 Feet, then @ 40 Feet
      • Alternating 3-Arm Angles (12 o'clock, 3 o'clock, and 6 o'clock)
    • Receiving Drill
      • Receive Baseball with Wide Bass
      • Do not squeeze the glove to receive
      • Get the ball in your hand as you bring open glove to chest
      • Close off your shoulders
      • Get the ball back in the air with rhythm
      • Glove Presentation must be prioritized
  2. Quarterback Drill from 60 feet
    • Throwing Drill
      • Plyometric footwork (non-lazy) • Changing Direction with Athleticism
      • Short Arm-Slot
    • Receiving Drill - Shortstops turning double play
      • Gain Ground with Footwork toward target
      • Do not close the glove to receive
      • Get the ball in your hand as you bring open glove to chest
      • Close off your shoulders
      • Get the ball in your hand in quarterback position
  3. Quarterback Drill from 90 feet
    • Throwing Drill
      • Plyometric footwork (non-lazy) • Changing Direction with Athleticism
      • Short Arm-Slot
    • Receiving Drill - Relays
      • Stay squared until you see the flight of the ball
      • Open glove side to receive 
      • Get the ball in your hand as you bring open glove to chest
      • Gain Ground with Footwork toward target
      • Do not close the glove to receive
      • Get the ball in your hand in quarterback position
  4. Shuffle-Shuffle Strike Drill from 120 feet
    • Throwing Drill
      • Plyometric footwork (non-lazy) • Changing Direction with Athleticism
      • Short Arm-Slot
    • Receiving Drill - Tags
      • Stay squared until you see the flight of the ball
      • Open glove side to receive
      • Get the ball in your hand as you bring open glove to chest
      • Drop hips to make aggressive tag
      • Turn glove side to find the next play with ball in hand in quarterback position
      • NO BALL GETS BY YOU

PHASE 3 (CREATING BACK SPIN WITH EXTENSION) • 70-90% EFFORT ON THROWS

For All Positions

  1. Long Toss (120+ Feet to 180+ Feet) 
    1. Throwing Drill 
      • Crowhop for OF's, Alternative Footwork for Infielders/Catchers/Pitchers
      • Do not make more than 1 throw from the same distance
      • Get Loft
      • All Throws Made in the Air (Hit Partner In Chest)
      • Create Perfect Back Spin with Longer Arm Action
      • Gradually put more effort into throws as length extends
    2. Receiving Drill
      • Receive ball without closing glove and get ball in hand
      • Get the ball in your hand as you bring open glove to chest
      • NO BALL GETS BY YOU

PHASE 4 (CREATING BACK SPIN WHILE DRAWING IN) • 80-100% EFFORT ON THROWS

For All Positions

  1. Long Toss (180+ Feet returning to 120 Ft)
    • Throwing Drill 
      • Crowhop for OF's, Alternative Footwork for Infielders/Catchers/Pitchers
      • Do not make more than 1 throw from the same distance
      • Long 1 Hops (2 Hops are better than throws made in the air)
      • Down Hill Actiion
      • Create Perfect Back Spin with Longer Arm ActionReceiving Drill
    • Receiving Drill
      • Receive ball without closing glove and get ball in hand
      • NO BALL GETS BY YOU
  2. Pull Downs From:
    • 120 Feet, 90 Feet, and 60 Feet
    • Throwing Drill
      • 3 Max Effort Downhill Throws from each distance with Aggressive Footwork 
      • Stay Closed at Footstrike
      • Fight to Get over Frontside
      • Hit Partner "In the Cup"
    • Receiving Drill
      • Receive ball without closing glove and get ball in hand
      • NO BALL GETS BY YOU

PHASE 5 (MAKING ATHLETIC PLAYS IN THE INFIELD) • 80-90% EFFORT ON THROWS

For Infielders, Catchers, & Pitchers

  1. Fast Catch
    1. 2-3 30 Second Intervals
    2. Do not squeeze the glove to receive
    3. Get the ball in your hand as you bring open glove to chest
    4. Get ball in your hand at Quarterback position
    5. Get the ball airborne with rhythm

Transition Catch Play into Drill Work & Highlight Areas in Scrimmage/Game Play where improvement in the catch routine will help players make plays.
