Baserunning Protocol #1

Use this protocol to both teach baserunning habits as well as a means of conditioning for position players. This protocol should be used to help build a foundation for our collective baserunning philosophy.

  1. Hard 90
    • Touch Front of Base
    • Breakdown within 5-8 Yards past the base (depending on athleticism/age)
    • Drop your hips (sink) to slow down
    • Find ball to right
    • VARIATION EXERCISE: Coach Claps Hands to simulate pass ball
      • Runner will advance to 2B
      • Stop on base
      • Find the ball
  2. Hard Turns
    • Create angle early out of the box for optimal angle to achieve straight line to 2B
    • Accelerate off the inside corner (2B side of base)
    • Overexaggerate length of turn
    • Suggestion: Place cones down for aids
      • Accelerate off the base to the cone
      • "Slam on the Breaks"
      • Touch the cone
      • Change Direction and go hard back to the base
  3. 1st-to-3rd
    • Secondary Lead then taking 2 bases on a hit
    • Accelerate off the inside corner (3B side) of the base
    • Create angle early to achieve an optimal line to 3B
    • Stop on the Base
    • Find the Ball
    • Walk Home
  4. Double
    • Create Optimal Angle out of the box to achieve straight line to 2B after hitting inside corner of 1B
    • Stop on the Base
    • Find the Ball
  5. Scoring from 2B on a Base Hit
    • Secondary Lead then taking 2 bases on a hit
    • Create Optimal Angle out of the secondary lead to achieve straight line to Home Plate after hitting inside corner of 3B
    • Run Hard through Home Plate
  6. Triple
    • Create Optimal Angle out of the box to achieve subsequent optimal angle to 2B to achieve straight line to 3B
    • Accelerate off inside corners of 1B and 2B
    • Stop on 3B
    • Find the Ball
  7. Tag on Line Drive to OF
    • Suggestion: Place cone down for aids
      • Secondary Lead
      • Touch Cone with Hand
      • Change direction to Tag
      • Touch base & change direction quickly
      • Run Hard through Home Plate
  8. Inside the Park HR
    • Create Optimal Angles around each base to achieve straight line between 3B and Home Plate
    • Accelerate off inside corners of each base
    • Run Hard

  • Drop Hips (Sink) to Change Direction or come to Stop
  • Hard Secondaries
